ILLUMINATIONS FOR SALE : go to the shop

Some of my paitings are strongly or completely inspired by medieval illuminations but some others are created by myself and represent long research and working hours. Please respect my creations by not copying them, even for private purposes. THANK YOU!

All my illuminations are carried out in a traditional way :

- Medium: I exclusively use parchment which is manufactured from the calf or kid, goatskin.

- Gilding: 22-carat gold leaf on gesso (mixture of fish glue, plaster, bowl of Arménie and honey water) or on gum ammoniac.

-The colouring is made from pigments crushed with a medieval binder containing egg white, gum arabic and honey water.

Some natural pigments are manufactured by myself (cinnabar, azurite, madder, wood of Brazil, cochineal, verdigris, ceruse, soot black).

Many techniques other than those I use can be found. But be sure that I strive as much as possible to work according to medieval processes, known from rediscovered translations of recipes (Theophilus, Dimier and Cennino Cennini).

I am not opposed to contemporary adaptations. Gouache on paper can satisfy a purely aesthetical pursuit. But it should be called with other words than illumination (ornamentation, decoration …)
As a professional, I feel historical truth (aesthetical, iconographical, technical, material) ought to be respected, that some humility should be had, and that the spiritual dimension of illumination should not be neglected (without necessarily making religions connotations).
All this does in no way forbid creating contemporary illuminations or revisiting medieval miniatures. Indeed, one should express her own dimension through one’s work. But one thing is obvious to me: one ought to be aware of what they do not know rather than brag about the little they know.
